The Greenhouse is Open

We look forward to the first week of March because we are anxious to start seeding flowers, onions, and more.

We fire up the wood pellet stove in our propagation house, the only one of our tunnels/greenhouses/hoop houses to have heat. It’s where we start thousands of seeds in trays for planting in our fields. It’s where we start all the tomatoes and graft the varieties for the season on hardy root stock. It’s even where we have lunch on the still cold winter days! Often the staff is working in short sleeves because it’s so warm.

The seed orders have been arriving daily for weeks. It’s fun to see all the packages, sort them into their proper storage containers, and then start the plan that has been worked out over the winter. Everything is planted on a schedule for optimum readiness for transplanting and then harvesting on schedule for the summer. Of course this seeding schedule has many rotations to it: start the seeds, water, transplant to larger pots when the plants are sized up, water, harden off in the warmer weather, then put the plants in the ground. The cycle is repeated, over and over. Then we all eat!

Today lavender, snapdragons, and onion were on the schedule. See the video and try to find the miniscule seeds!
